Digital Daughter

First LaptopSeveral weeks ago, I pledged to blog about my favorite woman in technology*.

I didn't have to look far...  she is my daughter, Catherine Grevet.

When she manifested a skill for complex jigsaw puzzles at 18 months, I should have known that her mind was wired to see the big picture, plan a strategy, and fit the pieces together.  That was back before Mattel's Barbie became a Computer Engineer.

Today Catherine is a first year PhD student in Computer Science.

Her specialty:  Human and Computer Interaction (HCI) and User Experience (UX).

Maybe her interest in the user experience dates back to that first "laptop" she's toting in the photo.  It was a French question-and-answer game where an electronic voice would curtly shout "YOU MADE A MISTAKE!!!" after each incorrect answer.

But most likely it came from her own UX as a Computer Science major at a small, all-female liberal arts college, her combined research experiences, and the mentorship of a family friend who is also an HCI matriarch, amongst others.  Despite her young age, she has numerous research experiences under her belt, has attended and presented papers at many conferences (including Grace Hopper and CHI), and continuously forges a broad and strong network in her field.  She holds her own in this highly male-dominated sector, and is an enthusiastic advocate for women in computing, never missing an opportunity to encourage women to consider a career in technology.

Visualize this:  Last summer Catherine was a contributor on the G-Nome Surfer project, a genomic information visualization program for a table top interface:

This summer she will be an intern software engineer with… well, if YOU were passionate about the user experience, visualization and touch screen applications who would YOU want to work for???

Catherine, thanks to you, the users of today won't be lusers tomorrow, because we will have programs that are more usable, more intuitive, and more ingenious!

And I am one proud mama!
